Lactation consultants are professional breastfeeding specialists who assist mothers in feeding their babies and prepare them for successful nursing.
Lactation consultants are trained in helping with breastfeeding problems including latching difficulties, sore nipples, and low milk production; they are also able to help babies who aren’t gaining enough weight. Lactation consultants can provide expert advice on how to position a baby, how to manage milk supply or pain, as well as on specific issues such as babies with cleft lip or palate, multiple babies, or mastitis.
In a typical one-on-one session with a lactation consultant a mother can expect to go through a medical and breastfeeding history of themselves and their baby, and for the consultant to witness a feed. They will then provide expert advice and assistance for ongoing breastfeeding practise.
If you have any concerns or difficulties in breastfeeding, it’s important to remember that every mother and baby are unique; book in to see a lactation consultant to help you discover the right style for you and help you through any issues you may come across.
